Extract iron from iron ore #5

Another attempt to extract iron from iron ore. This time we tried what happens if we bake the ore before loading it into the furnace. We did as the following:

1. We repaired the smelting furnace.
2. We broke up the ore into bits.
3. We dug a shallow hole, covered it’s surface with a layer adobe, then dried it. After that we were baking the iron ore at about 500-700C for around 4 hours in it. We kept the ore hot on ember until the last portion was loaded into the furnace.
4. We fully loaded the furnace with 10kgs of charcoal and when it was all lit we put the first round of ore-charcoal combo.
5. We processed 10 kilogrammes of ore and 25 kgs of charcoal in total during 3 hours with low intensity air input. After putting the last portion in, the blower was set to a much higher output rate and we continued until the end of the process like that for the last half an hour.
6. We checked a couple of times whether there was any slag formation, but there wasn’t.
7. In the end the result was much like the previous ones, maybe this time we got some bigger chunks of molten slag, which we haven’t had before, and there were some pieces which seemed more to be deforming upon hammering rather than shattering into pieces as before. Újabb kísérlet vas kinyerésére. Most kipróbáltuk, hogy mi történik, ha rendesen megpörköljük az ércet, mielőtt a kemencébe tesszük. Ezeket a lépéseket csináltuk.

1. Helyrehoztuk a bucakemencét.
2. Összetörtük a vasércet
3. Ástunk egy lapos gödröt, kibéleltük agyaggal, kiszárítottuk. Majd 4 órán át izzó faszénen 5-700 fok között pörköltük a vasércet. A vasércet izzó faszénen melegen tartottuk addig, amíg a kemencébe nem került az utolsó adag is.
4. A kemencét megtöltöttük faszénnel, és amikor átizzott, elkezdtük adagolni az ércet és a szenet.
5. 10 kiló ércet és összesen 25 kiló faszenet kis fokozatú légbefúvással kb 3 órán át égettünk. Az utolsó adag vasérc betevése után a levegőt nagy fokozatra kapcsoltuk és fél órán át, a folyamat végéig úgy hagytuk.
6. A folyamat során néhányszor ellenőriztük, hogy folyékony salak képződőtt-e, de nem.
7. A végén az eredmény eléggé hasonlított az eddigiekre, talán annyival jutottunk előrébb, hogy néhány összefüggő, olvadt salakdarabot találtunk. Illetve voltak olyan darabok a kemencében, amiket kalapáccsal ütve nem darabokra tört, hanem formázhatónak tűnt. Az eredmény részletesebb vizsgálata hamarosan…

We have made a new attempt to extract iron from iron ore.

First we took 2 kilos of that sand-like iron ore that we have collected in Rudabánya together with the iron ore stones. We heated it in the crucible for about 30 minutes. After the material collapsed in the crucible we poured into sand. We couldn’t find any iron, the material kept its sand like character.

During the second attempt we mixed 2 kilos of iron ore sand with the same volume of cole powder. For at least 2 hours we run the forge on maximum temperature, but it seems nothing happened.

Újabb kísérletet tettünk vas kinyerésére.

Először 2 kiló homokszerű vasércet, amit még Rudabányán gyűjtöttünk, maximális hőmérsékleten hevítettünk fél órán át. Az anyag összeesett a tégelyben, kiöntöttük homokba, de vasnak nyomát sem találtuk.

A második kísérletben 2 kiló új vasérc homokot összekvertünk ugyanolyan térfogató porrá tört koksszal. Legalább 2 órán át hevítettük, de az anyag szemmel láthatóan nem alakult át. A videón a magyar nyelvű magyarázó szöveg bekapcsolható feliratként.

Creating an iron symbol of the School

We were very happy that finally we could extract some iron from iron ore, even if the process was a little bit irregular.

So we thought to use it to create an iron symbol of the School the night before the meeting of the Masters of the School.

We messed up everything we could in the process of the preparation of the sand mold, we broke the original gypsum and clay molds and things like this, but at the end…

Az Iskola szimbólumának kiöntése vasból

Miután nagyon örültünk, hogy rendhagyó módon ugyan, de sikerült a vasércből vasat kinyerni, az Iskola Mestereinek találkozója előtti éjszkán nekiálltunk, hogy kiöntsük belőle az Iskola szimbólumát.

A homokforma előkészítésével nagyon sokszor kudarcot vallottunk, összetörtük az eredeti gipsz és agyag formákat, de végül…

Miután az első és második kisérletből maradt egy csomó összegyógyult izénk, gondoltuk, tovább kísérletezünk velük.

Egy erős mágnessel teszteltük, és úgy találtuk, hogy a második próbálokozás után maradt salakos keverékben több a vas, úgyhogy ezzel folytattuk a kísérletezést.

1. Kis darabokra törtük, és mágnessel sikerült egész kicsi, tiszta vasnak tűnő darabkákat találni. Lehet, hogy a bucakemencében végbement valamilyen változás, csak nem volt elég vas, hogy összeálljon nagyobb darbbá?
2. Aztan kiválogattuk azokat a darabokat, amik reagáltak a mágnesre.
3. Összekevertük kis darabokra tört faszénnel.
4. Kovácstűzön elkezdtük melegíteni a legnagyobb hőmérsékleten.
5. Kb 1 óra után a tetején kivált salakot kivettük. Lehűtés után mágnessel megnéztük, és csak nagyon kicsit vonzotta a mágnes.
6. Kiöntöttük az olvadékot homokba. Nem volt igazán folyós, inkább valami nyúlós massza volt.
7. A tégely alján maradt nagyobb salakdarabot eltávoltítottuk, és visszatettük a kovácstűzbe a tégelyt.
8. A második körben teljesen folyékony, tiszta vasat sikerült kiüntenünk a homokba. (Ezen a ponton annyira izgatottak voltunk, hogy sajnos ezt nem örökítettük meg.)
9. Egy darab vasat a kovácstűzben felhevítettünk, hogy megnézzük, kovácsolható-e. A kalapácsüteséktől darabokra tört, nem tűnt egyáltalán kovácsolhatónak.
10. Egy régi tégelyben aztán eredeti formájában betettünk a kovácstűzbe vasércet. Sajnos a tégely nem bírta a hőt, az alja gyakorlatilag elolvadt.

Okay, we have a lots of strange mixture from the first and second attempt. We thought to try something with it. We tested the mixtures from the first and second attempt with a very strong magnet and we found that the material from the second attempt reacted much more heavily to the magnet. So we continued the process with the mixture of the second attempt.

1. We broke them into small peaces and with the magnet we could separate very small peaces of clean iron. It seems in the furnace something happened and some very small iron peaces extracted.
2. Then we separated all those peaces from the mixture that reacted to the magnet.
3. We mixed it with charcoal broken into small peaces.
4. In the forge we started to heat on maximum power.
5. After 1 hour of heating we took the slug peaces from the top. We checked them with the magnet and they reacted poorly to it.
6. We loaded the melted stuff into sand. It wasn’t very liquid.
7. We removed a peace of slug from the bottom of the crucible.
8. For the second round we could load pure and clean iron into the sand!!! (We were so exited that didn’t record it). It seams the iron melted and sinked to the bottom of the crucible but it was totally covered with the solid slug.
9. We heated up one peace of iron in the forge to see if we can forge it, but it broke into peaces under the attack of the hammer.
10. Then we put original iron ore into another crucible to see what happens with it in the forge. But the crucible couldn’t resist to the temperature… 🙂

Vas kinyerése vasércből #2

Az első kísérletből próbáltunk következtetéseket levonni, úgyhogy építettünk egy keskenyebb de magasabb bucakemencét. Az első adag vasérc beöntése előtt vastag, izzó faszénréteget halmoztunk fel, hogy minden vasérc adag át tudjon haladni megfelelő mennyiségű faszénen.

A folyamat végén az elsőhőz nagyon hasonló eredményre jutottunk: semmi nem folyt ki, nehány nagy összeolvadt darab maradt a kemencében.

We came to some conclusions after the first attempt, so we changed the shape of the furnace to make it thinner but taller. And before putting the first portion of iron ore we put more charcoal to the furnace to make sure that all the iron ore can go through a good amount of charcoal.

At the end of the process the result was very much similar to the first attempt. No slug flew out, there were some bigger peaces of some strange mixture in the furnace.
